Periods can take a lot out of you, but having a heavy period makes it even tougher. You have to be extra vigilant so that you don’t get stained. This can be a big issue when you’re in school or at work or even at night when you’re asleep.
Add all of this to the pain from menstrual cramps and you have yourself a not so fun situation. Experts have their theories about what can cause a heavy period, and our in-house doctor, Dr. Bisi tells us some.
According to her, heavy periods can occur in women who just started menstruating, those who are approaching menopause and those who have hormonal disturbances. It can also be inherited or caused by some medicines.
Whatever the case may be, here are five ways to manage a heavy period:
Watch what you eat
The food you put in your body is very important and it could either help you or harm you. Be very careful what you eat, especially when you’re on your period. Try to avoid sweets, salt and caffeine which can make the situation worse.
Increase your iron intake
Take a multivitamin that has iron in it to boost your iron levels. You can also take folic acid during this period. Add iron rich foods, such as green vegetables, to your diet as well.
Exercise
A little bit of exercise will do you good and make you feel better. Exercise makes your blood circulate better and it also helps you control fat. Fat cells release excessive oestrogen , which can cause you to have a heavy period.
Use drugs
According to Dr Bisi, drugs like Felvin can help to reduce the flow of a heavy period. You can also ask your doctor for drugs to treat any underlying causes of a heavy flow.
Be prepared
Make sure you have enough pads and tampons to last you the whole day so you don’t get any leaks. You can also decide to try a menstrual cup which lasts longer than pads or tampons.
