Longest Serving School Principal In Nigeria Dies At 85



Veteran school principal and Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Jeremiah Dermot O’Connell is dead.
New Nigeria reports that O’Connell died in Ireland on Wednesday, 14th, March, 2018, after a failing health condition.

The 85-year-old Catholic priest, who retired last year, was under the employment of the Niger state government.’


O’Connell worked in Calabar as a Catholic Priest when he came to Nigeria in 1967. He then moved to Niger state where he became the principal of the Government Secondary School, Minna.

He was also conferred with the traditional title of Jagaban illimin Minna by the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Umar Farouk Bahago in recognition of his giant strides in the education sector.

As part of their last respect, the management of GSS Minna suspended the finals of the school’s sports festival.

O’Connell was also conferred with the title of the Member of the Federal Republic (MFR) by the Federal Government.
