Ondo partners Dangote on 3,000-hectare rice farm, to engage 6,000 youths

The continued task of safeguarding children from vaccine-preventable diseases through adequate and qualitative delivery of immunization services has been described as a responsibility that everyone must pursue with vigour.

This was the submission of the Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), at a meeting with Task Force members on Polio Eradication and Routine Immunization held at the Governor’s Office in Akure yesterday.

He enjoined Primary Healthcare workers to brace up to the task, saying more steps need to be taken towards delivering vaccination services to people in the communities.
Represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Wahab Adegbenro, he revealed that statistics of Routine Immunization in the state for January and February, 2018 have so far shown a decline in the coverage of all antigens compared to year 2017.

Akeredolu who pointed out that the number of unimmunised children in some of the Local Government Areas is increasing, urged members of the task force on Polio eradication, to double their efforts.

“As caregivers, you may need to examine your attitude to clients who daily, throng your health facilities to be sure you are not discouraging them from returning for important services such as antenatal, postnatal, family planning and especially, immunisation services.

“The race to have Nigeria de-listed from the global Polio Club (leaving Pakistan and Afghanistan) by the World Health Organization (WHO) is still hot.

“Therefore, we must be relentless in our individual and collective effort as stakeholders to ensure that our state and the country as a whole do not return to the dark moments of high under-5 morbidity and mortality due to the dreaded Polio virus”, he said.

The Governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to continually provide leadership that will enable the health sector, particularly the Ondo State Primary Healthcare Development Board, to continue delivering on its mandate of Routine Immunization in the state.

Arakunrin Akeredolu hinted that the state had a robust and impactful Measles Vaccination Campaign which was held between 8th and 20th of March, 2018 and had about 700,000 children immunized.
He further stated that, ‘be it Routine Immunization or Supplemental Immunization Exercises, the
Federal and Ondo State Government have continued to show commitment to reduction in under 5-year mortality.

The Governor however, appreciated Chairmen of all the 18 Local Government Areas, traditional and religious, global and technical partners, like the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF among others for their commitment to the battle against Polio.

Earlier in his welcome address, Permanent Secretary, Ondo State Ministry of Health, Dr Taye Oni said the state has always been in the forefront at eradicating Polio diseases, saying it would continue to be in that position.

He further appreciated the efforts of the Governor, and asked for more support from the State Government towards ensuring that the disease is completely eradicated.

Also, Ondo State representative of United Nations International Childrens Education Fund (UNICEF), Mr Tunde Ayoade, said they would continue to give needed support to the state.

“We have been giving Ondo State all the necessary support to ensure that it move forward and we will continue to do so.

“We also plead with Governor Akeredolu to employ more technical staff to enhance performance for polio immunization, to bridge the gap we are experiencing as soon as possible,” he said.

The Field Coordinator of Nigeria National Polio Plus Committee of Rotary Club International, Rotarian Gbenga Olayiwole commended Ondo State Government’s stern efforts at eradicating the scourge in the state.

He stated that the association has contributed $1.7b towards the eradication of Polio in the country and enjoined other bodies to imbibe the spirit of doing more to keep the disease at bay.

Olayiwole who assured more involvement from Rotary Club in the fight against Polio, stated that it would continue to partner the state government towards kicking Polio out of the state completely.

Mr Alex Okoh, the Director General, Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) has assured that the organisation would not compromise on transparency and integrity in the sale and management of public assets in the country. Buhari He said this in a statement issued by Amina Othman, the Head, Public Communications, on Friday in Abuja. Othman stated that Okoh gave the assurance at the joint kick-off meeting of the transaction advisers for the privatisation of Afam Power Generation Plant and the Yola Power Distribution Company in Abuja. He quoted the director general as saying “BPE had raised the bar for privatisation transactions: stakeholders would be carried along throughout the entire stages of transactions.” Okoh also said that criticisms trailed the initial privatisation of the power companies but that the lessons learnt in the previous exercise would be applied to set standard for fresh transactions. He added that transparency and professionalism were important in the bureau’s transactions. On emergence of FBN Quest Consortium as sole transaction adviser for Yola and Afam Power Companies, he said there was nothing untoward about it. “It is in furtherance of the bureau’s stance on transparency because the consortium participated in the two distinct bidding processes for the selection of transaction advisers and emerged as preferred bidder for Yola Power Company and reserved bidder for Afam Power Company,” he said. He explained that when negotiations with the preferred bidder — Energy Markets and Rates Consortium (EMRC) for advisory services for Afam Power Company transaction fell through, BPE made recourse to FBN Quest the reserved bidder. He added that this was in line with best practices. Okoh expressed confidence in FBN Quest’s ability to deliver on both transactions and pledged BPE’s support toward ensuring the success of standards to be set in the fresh transactions. Mr Taiwo Okeowo, the Deputy Managing Director of FBN Quest Consortium, said the company’s goal was to partner with BPE to set improved standard in the course of transactions and post-transaction activities. To achieve this, he said, a team of professionals cutting across technical experts, legal services and financial experts were on board to execute the task. Although Yola Distribution Company was successfully privatised and handed over to core investor in 2013, a force majeure was declared in 2015 by the core investor, citing insecurity in the North-East region of the country. Following this, the company was duly repossessed by Federal Government. The transaction for Afam Power Generation Company on the other hand fell through due to delay in signing the Gas Supply Agreement (GSA) and the Gas Transportation Agreement (GTA). In 2017, the National Council on Privatisation (NCP) however gave approval for fresh transaction to privatise the two power companies. (NAN)
